The Back And Shoulders
Client face down with back uncovered.
The client lies face down, the sheets uncovered to the hips. This position is used when working on a client's back, shoulders, back of the neck, and the back of the arms. If there is a need for work on the hips, then I will either do it here or when working on the back of the leg.
The Back Of The Leg
Client face down with one leg uncovered.
The client lies face down with one leg uncovered up to the hip. This position is used when working on the back of the leg and allows access to the bottom of the foot, the calf, and the hamstrings. It is also possible to work on the hip in this position.
The Front Of The Leg
Client face up with one leg uncovered.
The client lies face up, with one leg uncovered up to the hip. This position is used when working on the front of the leg and allows access to the top of the foot, the shin, the knee, and the quadriceps. I will often also work on the adductors, the Iliotibial(IT) band, and the sides of the thigh in this position. However, the side lying position is more effective at working these last two areas.
The Arms, Head, And Chest
Client face up with arms and upper chest uncovered.
The client lies face up with arms and upper chest uncovered. This position is used when working on the arms, forearms, hands, front of the shoulders, upper chest, neck, and head. When working on a female client's chest, I work only on the region uncovered and only when they give permission. For Medical Massage work of the chest, it is often helpful for a female client to wear a sports bra, so that more of the muscle attachments on the sternum and ribs can be worked while keeping the client covered.
Side Lying
The side lying position is used for a number of reasons during massage sessions. In this position the client lies on one side, with a pillow supporting the head, the bottom leg is straight, and the upper knee is bent and supported. This position is commonly used with pregnant clients after the first trimester. Side lying is also used when there is a medical reason why a client cannot lie face up or face down. This position is also useful for working the hips, the thigh adductors, the thigh Iliotibial(IT) bands, the sides of the ribs, and the sides of the neck. The client will switch and be on both sides during the session in order to work all of the areas needed.
Side Lying Work On The Back
Client on their side with their back uncovered.
The client lies on one side with the back uncovered. This position is used for working the shoulders, the upper back, and especially the lower back. This position also enables access to the arms if needed. If the hip needs work, I will either do that in this position or when the upper leg is uncovered.
Side Lying Work On The Upper Leg
Client on their side with their upper leg uncovered.
The client lies on one side with the upper leg uncovered. This position is used for working the hip, the outside of the thigh (IT band), the knee, the calf, the ankle, and the foot.
Side Lying Work On The Lower Leg
Client on their side with their lower leg uncovered.
The client lies on one side with the lower leg uncovered. This position is used for working the adductors, the knee, the calf, the ankle, and the foot.
